Reliable measurement data from one of Europe's most sensitive river junctions
Passau relies on modern measurement technology for greater flood safety
Passau, the “City of Three Rivers,” is located at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. Its unique geographic location makes the city a flood-prone area.
Task
The Inn can rapidly discharge large volumes of water into the Danube due to snowmelt and heavy rainfall, which regularly leads to flooding. Therefore, precise discharge measurement is essential for flood management. In Passau, two RQ30D systems have been in use on the Danube and Inn since 2011. The measuring sites present different challenges in terms of river width, flow conditions, and boat traffic, requiring flexible and reliable measurement technology.

Implementation
To meet current requirements for cybersecurity and system integration, the existing measuring stations were upgraded to modern RQ30+D technology. The non-contact multi-sensor solution measures flow velocities across the entire river width and provides precise discharge data. All sensor data is consolidated centrally in a data logger and automatically transmitted to the government server. This provides a seamless, modern, and reliable measurement infrastructure along the Danube and Inn rivers.
RESULt
The modernized measurement solution provides long-term, reliable discharge data for flood warnings, hydropower, and navigation. At the same time, it meets current requirements
