Avalanche control in the Almaty region

AValanche Control in the Almaty region

Turnkey avalanche monitoring in Kazakhstan

Task

Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, is surrounded by around 300 glaciers and mountains. Due to this location, the city administration wants to be able to accurately assess the avalanche situation in order to protect the population. We, a global leader in environmental and safety technologies, have successfully supplied 37 fully automated weather stations in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The disaster authority in Almaty turned to Sommer. The reputation of reliability of technology and experience in the high alpine region and the view to Europe in terms of expertise preceded the project.

Solution

These advanced stations monitor a variety of meteorological parameters, including snow temperature, snow load, water content in the snow, wind speed and air temperature.

The monitoring stations are an integral part of a comprehensive monitoring system developed by Sommer. These systems offer an "all-in-one" solution that covers all aspects of snow monitoring, from data acquisition to visualisation in the cloud and automatic alerting.

Implementation

Fully automatic operation: The weather stations operate fully automatically, without human intervention and minimal maintenance. This ensures continuous and reliable data collection.
Comprehensive parameter monitoring: The stations monitor various weather parameters in real time, including snow temperature, snow load, water content in the snow, wind speed and air temperature. This detailed information enables better forecasts and improved safety measures against them.
Remote data transmission: The collected data is automatically transmitted to a central server where it is stored and analysed. This enables a rapid response to changing conditions.
Intuitive data visualisation: The Sommer MDS V2 offers a user-friendly interface for visualising the collected data. This enables those responsible to quickly and effectively access the available measured values and make further decisions.
