Hydrological Monitoring - Flood Warning

Project: Hydrological Monitoring - Flood Warning
Location: Achfurt - Dornbirn, Vorarlberg, Austria

Conceptual formulation
The Dornbirn Achfurt, a ford across the River Ach, is a public road that carries approximately 7,000 vehicles a day and is regularly flooded. People come to harm time and again because they misjudge the situation.

Solution
Environmental protection excluded the option of building a bridge. Besides structural modifications on the ford (raising the roadway and widening the river culvert), an automatically controlled barrier is expected to improve safety significantly.

Implementation
There is non-contact measurement of the water level in the area of the ford. In conjunction with compensation for disturbing influences caused by the rough water surface, reliable evidence of the water level is provided. If the upper limit level is exceeded for a preset time, the barrier will be closed and an alarm message will be sent to Dornbirn municipal authorities by means of an alarm fax and a mobile phone. The system can be maintained and parameters can be assigned conveniently via an Internet Browser interface. Current level values and inspection messages can also be viewed online.
