Geotechnical Monitoring – Zauchengraben Bridge
Project: Geotechnical Monitoring – Zauchengraben Bridge
Location: Plöckenpass, Carinthia, Austria
Conceptual formulation
In 2001, work started on building the Zauchengraben bridge. The structure is located in a geologically critical area and placed extremely exacting demands on designers. The decision was made to use technical measuring equipment to capture bottom stresses and deformation in the foundations and abutments in order to investigate interactions between the bridge and the ground more thoroughly and to obtain important information relevant to similar structures in the future.

- Building the bridge over the Zauchengraben

- Extensometer on arch abutment
Solution
In close collaboration with the consulting engineers, a measuring system was designed and implemented already during construction work. This system captures pressure conditions in the foundations of the bridge and movements of the arch abutments. This made it possible to obtain important information concerning stresses already during the various bridge construction phases.

- Central acquisition of measured values

- Load testing of the completed bridge
Implementation
After completion of the bridge, the measuring system will continue to operate for at least 3 years and will allow continuous observation of stresses in the foundations and the concrete support structure. The data thus obtained will provide civil engineers with valuable information for similarly challenging project work in the future. Engineers can use our powerful METWin software tool to analyse the data thus obtained.
