Geotechnical Monitoring – Bridge over the Ganderbach
Project: Geotechnical Monitoring – Bridge over the Ganderbach
Loaction: Pians, Tyrol, Austria
Conceptual formulation
The Arlberg railway crosses the River Ganderbach just after the station at Pians. One abutment of the Ganderbach bridge is located within an area affected by active slope movement. In the past, landslides led to displacements in structural joints and damage to the bridge bearing as well as to the tracks. Previous improvement measures showed no lasting effect.
Solution
To protect the bridge, the slope was initially stabilised using tie beams and pretensioned permanent anchors. Long-term observations are expected to reveal whether these measures were sufficient to stabilise the loose ground.
Implementation
All monitoring of the slope at risk takes place fully automatically. Measured values from various detectors (anchor load cells, extensometer, level measuring sensors) are captured and stored every hour. This continuous monitoring yields reliable evidence of the stability or movement of the slope. All data from the measurement station can be conveniently retrieved and analysed from a remote office over a GSM phone link.
